Attention BDMHA Members,
We would like to formally announce the retirement of our Hockey Development Professional (HDP), Shawn MacKenzie. Shawn will continue to work very closely with BDMHA and continue to be a resource for our association.
Shawn was born in Bedford, Nova Scotia and grew up playing minor hockey in BDMHA. He continued his hockey journey to Junior A for the Halifax Lions and three years of Major Junior hockey in the OHL. Shawn was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 1980 NHL entry draft and enjoyed five years playing professionally for the NHL, IHL, and AHL, including a Calder Cup Championship. He coached five years in the OHL and over 10 years in the QMJHL, including the Halifax Mooseheads from 2000-2004. Shawn is a two-time QMJHL coach of the year nominee, winning the award in 2002-2003 and a finalist for CHL Coach of the Year that same year. Since 2006, Shawn has been an invaluable member of Bedford Minor Hockey Association and a tremendous supporter of our community.
For the past 16 years Shawn has been a fixture in our rinks, at games, and at practices. Shawn won the Hockey Nova Scotia Ken Martin award in 2020 which recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to the development of amateur hockey in Nova Scotia at the provincial level. In addition, BDMHA won HNS’s development association of the year in 2009, 2010, and 2012. Shawn has been a mentor, a leader, and a role model for our coaches, players, and members. Shawn will continue to support BDMHA as needed in various programs but has officially retired as our HDP.
On behalf of BDMHA, our members, our Board, our coaches, and our players we wish you the very best in your retirement and we appreciate all that you have given to our association.
Congratulations on your retirement and thank you for your contribution over the past 16 years.
