Coaches and Volunteer Certifications for 2011/12

Welcome Coaches/Manager/Trainers to the 2011/12 Season!!!

This page provides coaches and volunteers with the information they require to ensure they meet the various certifications established by Hockey Nova Scotia.

New Volunteers - First thing you must do is sign up for an ehockey account. Click here: https://ehockey.hockeycanada.ca

Past Volunteers: Please check your Hockey Canada e-hockey account to determine if your qualifications are valid. Be careful to check for CAR, even if you completed a criminal record check last year.

To register for a clinic, please complete the following steps:

STEP ONE: Coaching certification requirements vary depending on the level of hockey. Please review carefully the relevant requirements for the level of hockey you will be coaching to determine which clinics are applicable. Coaching certification requirements can be viewed here www.hockeynovascotia.ca/hns_12466.html

STEP TWO: Review the HNS Clinic Schedule and choose three preferred dates.

http://www.hockeynovascotia.ca/user/File/Development/2011-2012%20Coach%20Clinic%20Schedule(3).pdf

NOTE: The October 27th Requalification clinic is full.  The November 19th and 26th  and the Dec 4th clinics are now full.
More safety clinics are to be offered but no confirm dates yet.

STEP THREE: Email Abigail Cook (abigailcook.hockey@gmail.com) the following information:

• Your name

• Your address

• DOB

• Team/Division

• Your three clinic dates, listed in order of preference

Do not contact Hockey NS directly – coaches are not permitted to register themselves and all registrations must go through Abigail.

Once your registration has been confirmed, you will be notified by email. You are expected to attend the entire clinic. Failure to do so will negate your qualification. Please register early as clinics fill up fast! It is very important that coaches commit fully to the clinics they sign up for. The association/teams will be required to incur clinic fees for any coach who fails to show up to a clinic. Any questions please contact Abigail Cook (abigailcook.hockey@gmail.com)

Risk Management

The Speakout course, which is MANDATORY for anyone involved with a team, is not included on the HNS clinic list. The course will be run by BDMHA in the fall and we will advise the date as soon as we have it. The Speakout course is a 4 hours long and typically held in the evening on a weeknight. As an alternative to the Speakout Course, volunteers have the option of completing the Respect in Sport on-line training. Cost for this program is $30.00. The cost of the Speak Out is covered by BDMA and Hockey Nova Scotia. The cost of the Respect in Sport is not covered by the Association.  There is no expiry date on either course.

Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Child Abuse Registry (CAR)

In addition, any person having contact with a minor (includes coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, managers) must have a valid Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sectors check, and Child Abuse Registry check on file with Hockey Nova Scotia. This process must be completed every three (3) years and will show up on your Hockey Canada ehocky account.

If you require a Criminal Record Check please go to your local RCMP /Police station.  You must present Nova Scotia Driver’s License or Nova Scotia ID Card and one other of:

·         health card

·         birth certificate

·         passport

·         social insurance number

Make sure a VULNERABLE SECTOR CHECK is done when you are applying for your CRC.

We need the original copy of the CRC.  Please drop it off at the front desk of the BMO with my name on envelope. Then send me an email so I will know to pick it up.   You will also be reimbursed for this if you give me a receipt.

IMPORTANT:  Should your Criminal record check show a problem, review the Hockey NS document below to address the issue.

For Child Abuse form please click here:

Copy a piece of ID and leave form at Front Desk of BMO Attention: Abigail Cook.  Please note that is can take over a month to have your name checked on the Child Abuse registry.  We need these from no later than Nov 15th so there is time to get it into Hockey Nova Scotia

Volunteers who are not registered, with this information, with Hockey NS by December 31 will be removed from the bench.
